Google Business Profile: The Complete Guide

Search 'restaurant near me' or 'plumber in [your city]' and the first thing you see isn't a list of websites — it's a map with a handful of businesses, their ratings, hours, and a call button. That box is powered by Google Business Profile, and for most local businesses, it gets seen by far more people than the website itself does.

Setting it up starts with claiming and verifying your business on Google — a process that typically involves a postcard, phone call, or email confirmation depending on your business type and location. Once verified, the real work begins: filling in your category correctly (this affects which searches you show up for), your service area or address, your real hours including holidays, and a phone number that's actually answered.

Photos matter more than most business owners expect. Profiles with recent, genuine photos of the actual location, products, or team consistently get more clicks and calls than ones with no photos or generic stock imagery. Aim to add a handful of new photos every month rather than uploading a batch once and forgetting about it — Google and customers both notice recency.

Reviews are the next major factor. A steady stream of genuine reviews — and thoughtful replies to all of them, good or bad — signals to both Google and potential customers that you're active and trustworthy. Never buy fake reviews; it violates Google's policies and can get your entire profile suspended, which is far more damaging than a handful of average reviews.

Finally, use the Posts and Q&A features. Posting updates, offers, or announcements keeps your profile active in Google's eyes, and pre-answering common questions in the Q&A section saves potential customers a step before they even reach out. Treat your Google Business Profile as a living part of your marketing, not a one-time setup task, and it will keep paying off.
